In Hans Christian Andersen's orginial fairytale, the protagonist Thumbelina is a passive character who takes the reader on an adventure that is mostly defined by her very size. Birds, flowers, even walnuts create a whole different setting when the protagonist is just half a thumb tall. In my redesign of the vintage fairytale, I wanted to focus on the sizing of the character, since that was the aspect that caught me the most. But not only did I redesign the book cover, I even imagined that I was doing it for a retelling of the fairytale. One in which the protagonist is fierce, adventurous and witty. Maybe one day there is going to be a story just like that.
